Window tints and films are popular in Salt Lake City. They provide benefits such as energy efficiency, as well as health advantages like UV filtering. However, we get a lot of inquiries about whether or not window tinting will harm or even kill house plants. The answer is almost no window films or tints will hurt house plants.

UV Blocking Film and House Plants

UV protective window film is virtually unnoticeable and filters out 99.9% of harmful UV radiation from entering your Salt Lake City home. Plants don’t need UV light though. Because plants “feed” on the red and blue wavelengths in the visible light spectrum.  So as long as they are getting enough visible light your plants will thrive.

Decorative Window Film and House Plants

Decorative window films come in every color, texture, and pattern imaginable. Your plants may be affected depending on the pattern’s density or the frosted film’s light transmissivity. However, in most cases, your plants will simply need to acclimate to the new light conditions since there is still plenty of sunshine entering through the windows. It usually takes a few weeks for your plants to recover their speed of growth–especially in a city like Salt Lake City with so much sun.

Solar and Glare Reducing Window Tints and House Plants

The only type of window tint that might harm your houseplants is darkening solutions or screens that block natural light. Because they block key waves of visible light too. It will differ from film to film since each tint darkens rooms by a specific percentage by restricting certain red and blue wavelengths plants need to grow. A window film professional, such as us, will have all the information on the films we install and can assist you in selecting the correct level or shade for your horticultural requirements.
